Why install Linux?

Windows operating systems are notoriously susceptible to attack by viruses.  Microsoft would have you believe that the only reason there are so many viruses that attack their products is because they are so popular.  This is not true.  They are susceptible to attack because they are poorly designed and written.

Linux is Open Source software, distributed under the GNU General Public License.  The GPL is intended to ensure that you have the freedom to use the software, and that you will have the right to the source code as well.  Because the source code is available to everyone to inspect, fix and modify, it is scrutinized by programmers around the world.  Open source has proven to produce extremely reliable, high quality software.

Microsoft has been campaigning hard against Open Source Software, and it has been a dirty campaign.  The government of Peru, for one, has decided that all Peruvian government offices shall use open source software for official business.  You might find a Peruvian senator's response to Microsoft Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt interesting.

It is designed for reliability and security.  It is not susceptible to viruses as Windows is.  There are many open source applications available for it.  In fact, WINE provides the necessary interfaces to allow many Windows applications to run under Linux.
