What is Linux?

Linux is an open source operating system designed to act like Unix.  Both were designed to be secure operating systems. Strictly speaking, Linux is only the "kernel," written by Linus Torvalds. It is the core of the operating system.  A complete Linux environment has many components beyond the Linux kernel.  There are Graphical User Interfaces and many applications.
